What about jasmine rice?

Making rice and always cooking properly is actually quite simple. However, I have met many people who have asked me how I make my rice. This was surprising to me! Growing up in the Caribbean, rice was always a staple in our meals at home. It could be lunch or dinner, and rice was usually there. Even though I normally cooked with medium grain rice, once I tried jasmine rice, I could not go back. I love the texture, the aroma, the feel and how it perfectly blends with whatever sauce/broth-y food I make, even my Puerto Rican beans! Perdón, abuela. LOL.

Jasmine rice has is usually grown in Thailand and other Eastern Asian countries where the climate is humid. It is usually used in fried dishes and pad thai. In addition, it goes really well with chilis, grilled vegetables and, again, anything with a sauce. Unlike basmati rice that tends to be more dry and firm (and equally delicious), jasmine rice is softer and more fluffy. It is also characterized by its beautiful aroma.

Rice simply goes really well with all sorts of meals. It does not take long to make, it is filling and delicious. Regardless of the type of rice, whenever you make a stew, curry or anything with sauce, there is something so special about mixing that sauce with the rice and taking that delicious bite. There is a reason why rice is a staple in so many places around the world!

How do I get it right?

I have to confess that my husband helped with the science behind how we cook jasmine rice at home. Even though he did not grow up with it as I did, he loves it just as much. I was surprised to know when I met him that he knew how to make rice but he also did it well! After some testing and tweaking with oils and salts, we have agreed on this beautiful recipe that will come out perfect every single time.

This is how!

For this recipe, you need 1.5 cups of jasmine rice, 3 cups of water, seasoned salt and 1 tbsp of olive oil (good quality.) The first thing to do is to rinse your rise. I know there are different philosophies out there about whether or not to rinse your rice but jasmine rice. However, if you do rinse it, you will be getting rid of the residual starch and ensuring your rice turns out fluffy. Otherwise, that starch can be gelatinized during the cooking process and you will end up with some sticky grains. Still, you are more than welcome to your research and decide what is best for you.

Grab a medium sized pot and add your 3 cups of water. Set it to boil. Once it boils, add seasoned salt (I like Lawry’s) and olive oil. If you can use a quality olive oil it is best as the rice absorbs the flavor of whatever you cook it in. Then add your rice and stir well. After that, place the lid on the pot and lower the heat to low, about a level 2 or 2.5. Set your timer to 15 minutes and do not open the pot until the timer goes off. At that point, take off the lid and give the rice a good stir. Turn off the heat and serve immediately with your favorite side.
