Sweetened condensed milk is said to have been invented in France in 1835. Not long after, France and Vietnam became popular for adding condensed milk to their coffee. Particularly Vietnamese coffee was known for the pairing of dark coffee and sweetened condensed milk, as it was difficult to acquire regular milk there in the mid 1800’s. Today they use a small metal cup called phin, which brews the coffee directly into a mug, and makes a small but robust cup of coffee!

Along those lines, adding condensed milk to coffee is not uncommon around the world, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Mainly those places where dark, strong coffee is the go-to, including home: Puerto Rico. The creaminess and extra sweetness in the milk add the perfect balance to a bold brew.

Coffee with Condensed Milk Recipe.

Whether you like your morning coffee hot or cold, coffee with condensed milk is a delicious way to start your day! This recipe is extremely simple, yet it yields smooth coffee every time. The best part? It only takes a few minutes and requires minimal ingredients.

The equipment needed depends on the brewing method you prefer for your coffee. You can use:

  • French press (a favorite)
  • Moka pot
  • Regular coffee pot

You will also need a vessel such as a tall glass if making iced coffee, or a regular coffee mug for hot brew coffee.

The idea is to have a strong brew to perfectly balance the decadence of the sweetened condensed milk. There is no need for fancy equipment or complicated brew methods to enjoy a great cup of coffee made at home. Even a coffee sock will do! That’s how my great-grandmother made coffee and it never disappointed. 😊

As far as ingredients, you need the following for two servings:

  • 10-12 ounces of your favorite type of coffee brew –preferably dark roast
    • For the French press method, I use 70 g of coarsely ground coffee beans and 18 ounces of hot water. Allow it to sit for 3 – 4 minutes then press.
  • 2 ounces (about 59.15 ml) of sweetened condensed milk.

If using cold brew concentrate, dilute it to your liking, then add sweetened condensed milk and stir. Either way, it is easy and delicious! The best iced coffee is the one you enjoy. Perfect on a hot day or for an extra boost on a difficult morning.

Variations.

As far as the type of coffee goes, dark roast coffee is preferable. This is due to the sweetness and lusciousness of the condensed milk. Dark coffee roast creates perfect balance in this case.

For iced coffee, I prefer cold brew concentrate. It is easy to make, as it only requires cold water and coarsely ground coffee beans, and you can get several servings from it. Great for when you are rushing but still want a nice cup of coffee to go. Plus, since it makes strong black coffee, you can adjust it to your liking.

Also, if you like cold brew foam but do not always have time to make it, the mere addition of condensed milk will give you the most delicious iced coffee ever. Homemade cold brew recipe.

If you are vegan or lactose intolerant, sweetened condensed coconut milk is a great alternative to regular condensed milk. It has a very similar texture and will still add that perfect touch of sweetness. You can also use coconut milk in a pinch but it will lack the creamy effect.

If you are looking for the traditional Vietnamese iced coffee, you can find a Vietnamese coffee filter online such as this one. Also, the most common way to make it is utilizing robusta beans. Fun fact: Vietnamese hot coffee typically includes egg yolk as well!

Bonus! Coffee Ice Cream.

To make coffee ice cream, you need 1/4 cup of cold brew (or ¾ cup cold strong coffee), a cup of heavy cream, 14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk, and ½ – ¾ cup of toppings of your choice. E.g. dark chocolate chunks, toasted coconut flakes, coffee beans. You can also add an ounce of coffee liquor for extra flavor!

Mix thoroughly in a large mixing bowl, move to a freezer-safe container and freeze for a couple of hours or until solid. I used the kitchen aid mixing bowl to make a delicious soft serve. Enjoy!
